Biography of Andrew Weil, MD

photo of Andrew WeilAndrew Weil, M.D., integrative medicine pioneer, best-selling author and internationally-recognized thought leader, is founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (AzCIM) at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Ariz., where he also holds the Jones/Lovell Endowed Chair in Integrative Rheumatology and is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health.

Weil has devoted the past three decades to developing, practicing, and teaching others about the principles of integrative medicine. In 1994, he established The Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine with the mission of leading the transformation of healthcare by creating, educating, and actively supporting a community of professionals who embody the philosophy and practice of integrative medicine, taking an active part in educating and preparing more than 400 healthcare providers to-date.

Weil was born in Philadelphia in 1942, received an A.B. degree in biology (botany) from Harvard in 1964 and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1968. After completing a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, he worked a year with the National Institute of Mental Health, then wrote his first book, The Natural Mind. From 1971-75, as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, Dr. Weil traveled widely in North and South America and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants, and alternative methods of treating disease. From 1971-84 he was on the research staff of the Harvard Botanical Museum and conducted investigations of medicinal and psychoactive plants.

TIME magazine named Weil one of 25 most influential people in the USA in 1997, and one of 100 most influential people in the world in 2005.

Weil has authored 11 books; most recently, Why Our Health Matters. Earlier titles include the national bestsellers Spontaneous Healing, 8 Weeks to Optimum Health, Eating Well for Optimum Health, The Healthy Kitchen, and Healthy Aging. He is Director of Integrative Health and Healing at Miraval Life in Balance Resort in Catalina, Arizona; monthly columnist for Prevention magazine; editorial director of, the leading online resource for healthy living; author of the monthly Self Healing newsletter; and the founder of Weil Lifestyle, LLC, the proceeds of which go to the Weil Foundation. He lives near Tucson, Arizona, USA.
